The Home of Gnome takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the peculiar world of garden gnomes. Although they have caught on in Britain almost as an art form, it was a German potter in 1870 that first produced ceramic gnome figures. He first showed them in 1884 and they became a massive hit, outselling his ceramic animals. They soon travelled to Britain and the first gnome was thought to have been brought to Britain by Sir Charles Isham around 1888. The gnomes were installed at his home Lamport Hall and caused quite a stir in British society at the time. When he died in 1903 they were destroyed but one was hidden and remains at Lamport Hall today, worth £2million! Nowadays they are commonplace and in many gardens.
