Allergic reactions to dogs are caused by the presence of two allergenic proteins in their dander, urine and saliva. These are the Can F 1 and Can F 2 protein. The Can F 1 in saliva is deposited on the dog`s coat when it licks itself. Additionally, a dogs sebaceous glands produce some of the allergens. This is the reason why shed hair and dander are mostly associated with dog allergies. However, there are dogs that produce less dander. Non-shedding dogs come in various sizes and temperaments. There are small, medium-size as well as large non-allergenic dogs. Some are great companions, such as the Shih Tzu. Other little-shedding dogs are good hunters: The Basenji, Norfolk terrier and Norwich terrier fall under this category. These dogs are also adapted to living in varying climate. The Samoyed, for example, has a thick double coat that keeps him warm in the freezing weather of Siberia. The Mexican hairless dog, on the other hand, has little or no hair and thrives in the warm Mexican weather.
